A letter from your son/daughter to you!
Dear Moms,
Thank you very much for helping to organize the activities for Hanukkah. We liked it very much, especially the game with the donuts. We also enjoyed making the Chanukia but we also had a lot of fun playing the bingo game. The secret message and word searches were amazing.
Yours sincerely,
All the Grade 3 Students

December 7-11, 2009 Update & Homework Assignments
What did grade 3 students do last week?
Math – Multiplication & Problem Solving
Science – Animal Defenses
Social Studies – Researching a Country of Their Choice
Language Arts – Imperative Verbs & Instruction Writing
Important Note to Parents:
We are moving along quickly in math. All students need to practice their multiplication facts. Rather than “figure out” what a product is, for example, 6 X 3, by adding 6 + 6 + 6, students should be able to say “18” quickly. Please encourage your child to practice these facts 0-9 until they know them by heart. This is a vital skill in order to further progress in math. Today, Ms. D’s students were given triangles to help them with these facts. Your child can show you how to use them. After they know their multiplication facts, they can move onto division using these same triangles. Please encourage your son or daughter to practice their facts daily. As always, thank you for your support.

G3 have been having fun in music; we’ve been listening to music from around Asia and trying to guess where the music comes from. What makes the music sound Chinese, Indian or Malaysian? They have been learning about different rhythms and how they make different patterns; how percussion instruments make their sounds and why they are called percussion and how we can fit different rhythms together to create our ostinato just for Grade 3.

Note to Parents:
Grade 3 had another successful week.
Math – Continuation of placement value and problem solving
Science – Studied various life cycles including that of the frog
Social Studies – Started decorating their “Me Box”
Language Arts – A focus on including interesting details in writing and reading assessments
A Note about Homework:
-- Grade 3 students are expected a maximum time of 45 minutes of homework per day. It would be to the benefit of each child if 15 minutes of reading is in addition to that time period. Additionally, with our new pilot Putonghua (Mandarin) Program, all students in grades 3-5 should expect to have nightly practice for homework.
-- A commitment to complete homework is essential for all students, however is should not be an unreasonable burden on either the student or the family. If you feel that your son or daughter is not coping, then please contact us.
-- Important Dates to Remember:
September 15, 2009 Back to School Night
-- Students, please remember: There will be a spelling test for our first unit on Monday. You may wish to practice writing each word. You can also practice using each word in a sentence so you are prepared for the test. Grade 3 Update & Homework Assignments
August 31-September 4, 2009
Note to Parents:
-- Congratulations for completing your first full week of Grade 3! Students have done remarkably well settling into their new routines. We had a busy week:
Math – Even/odd numbers and placement value. Ask your child about the difference between the Standard, Expanded and Written Form of a number.
Science – The start of a unit on Lifecycles. You may want to ask your son or daughter about Bill Nye the Science Guy and what they know about the lifecycle stages of a butterfly.
Social Studies – A new unit on “Me, Myself and My Family.” Students completed a Personal Profile and started their “Me Box.” Each student will decorate their “Me Box.” The outside of the box will have pictures, drawings or items that represent themselves. We brainstormed ideas such as having one side of the box full of pictures or items of their favorite sports, family pets, friends, hobbies, etc. The inside of the box will be decorated in a similar way, but these items represent less obvious ideas such as interests that their friends may not know of, pictures of family far away, places lived at before Hong Kong, etc. Students may gather any materials from home that they wish to use for their box and bring these to school on Tuesday.
Language Arts – Students have been learning about how to focus on a clear, small topic and in adding lots of detail in their writing. They also practiced “paired reading” in which students read out loud together as they search for information in text.
-- Today, students started their new Spelling books. Each Monday, they will have a short lesson which will include time given to complete the pages for that lesson. Any pages not finished in class should be finished on Monday for homework. Throughout the week, students should practice spelling the words for that lesson. The following Monday, they will have a spelling test on those words, before continuing onto the next lesson. Attached is a Spelling Practice Sheet. They may wish to use this method to practice their weekly spelling words.
Students have new planners and each student is responsible for bringing their planner to and from school each day. While most of their assignments will be listed in this Monday Update, there may be other assignments or reminders written by the students. In addition, we have reserved the last line of each day to record the number of minutes read at home. We would like each student to read at least 15 minutes per day. They should write:
Title – Author – Minutes Read – Parent’s Signature
Example: Because of Winn-Dixie – DiCamillo – 15 min. _________

Grade 3 has had a very exciting start to the new year! Carmel School has its own music room where we can make music and move and dance and have fun! It’s so exciting to have a room just for music and the children all seem to really like it. They come in looking excited and leave dancing and with a smile on their faces.
Grade 3 will be starting the recorder. A letter is going out to you soon. They will find it a bit difficult at first and I am sure you will discover another good reason why you need to buy ear plugs! However, I will be available to help them during recess times if they need individual help. We’ve only had one lesson this week but we had fun! They sang a song; clapped some rhythms, learned about ¼ and 1/8th notes, and listened to some aboriginal music from Australia and heard a new instrument called a didgeridoo! I am also hoping that they will sign up to join the choir and the instrumental group that I am trying to start. They will happen during their lunch recess once a week. I am hoping that they will have so much fun doing it, that I will have a waiting list of eager participants!

Grade 3 Update & Homework
August 24-28, 2009
August 24-28, 2009
Note to Parents:
-- It was wonderful to meet all the parents and students last week. We can tell already that this is a wonderful class and the children have adjusted quite easily to third grade.
-- Each week, you will receive a short update and the weekly homework assignments. While the homework for the entire week is given on Monday, students may wish to follow the recommended schedule. This will prevent them from having too much work on one day. In addition, many times (for math, especially) the homework coincides with a lesson covered that day during class. Some students may have trouble and get frustrated completing an assignment if they had not yet learned that particular skill. All homework should be returned on Friday morning.
-- Please note that our classroom has a blog located at http://carmel-3.blogspot.com/ You will find a copy of the homework posted on this blog along with other helpful information, a reminder of the homework policy and important dates to remember. We would like the students to check this blog on a regular basis. Since this may be new to some of them, we will introduce this in class over the next few days.
