Grade 3 Update & Homework Assignments

What did grade 3 students do last week?
Math – Measuring in cm, m and km
Science – Weathering and erosion of land
Social Studies – Practice mapping skills using Longitude, Latitude
Language Arts – Proof reading and editing stories.
Reminder to Parents about Stanford Tests
During this week your child will be taking the Stanford Tests, Tenth Edition and the Otis Lennon School Ability Test, Eight Edition.
This week is a busy one for the children!
Grade 3 students should get approximately ten hours of sleep each night (we know this is tough, but try your best). In addition, they should come to school after a well balanced breakfast and with a fruit/vegetable snack for the mid-morning.
This week, due to the tests, the students will be given minimal homework in order for them to get plenty of rest, sleep and nourishment. Please ensure that they make a concerted effort to read each night, this will help them get in the swing of things in preparation for the sponsored read-athon that’s coming up in the weeks leading up to the next ‘Book Café’. More details to follow!

Homework Assignments
Monday
• Read 15 minutes
• Complete the two “Spelling in Context” pages in your lesson for the week. If you did not complete the other pages for that lesson in class you may finish any time this week (time permitted). Spelling book may be returned tomorrow for extra house points. Keep a copy of words to study throughout this week. Test is on Monday.
Tuesday• Read 15 minutes
• Math Worksheet (assigned in class) to be returned tomorrow
Wednesday• Read 15 minutes
• Math Worksheet (assigned in class) to be returned tomorrow
Thursday• Read 15 minutes
• Science Workbook – page 35 ‘Why are rocks and soil important?’

Homework Policy Agreement
Homework is an important part of school. We want to start the year off right and avoid any homework hassles. Here are some helpful homework guidelines:
* Write all assignments in your planner daily.
* Take all materials for homework home in your back pack or homework folder.
* Have a regular schedule (time) to do homework.
* Have a regular place to do homework such as your kitchen table or bedroom desk.
* Check your planner carefully. Did you do everything? Check each item off.
* Pack your bag carefully right after you are done.
When you get to class unpack everything for the whole day including your homework, communication book, snack, water bottle, pencil case, etc. and read the board for further instructions and morning work. Do this before 7:45 a.m.
What happens if you forget your homework? You will miss one morning recess to make up the work. You will also write a letter or send home an email letting your parents know of the missing work. Each missing assignment is recorded in a Missing Homework Book. If you miss three homework assignments in one month, you will need to stay in the classroom for one afternoon (lunch recess). Please review this with your parents and sign below to indicate that you understand and agree with these procedures.
